A delightful collection of images from the 1840s to the present illuminates teh history of the Land Park Area. Anyone who has lived there or in the nearby neighborhoods of Sacramento will be captivated. There is a thorough pictorial account of development from the early town of Sutterville and pioneer farms, ranches, and dairys to the present day showcase residential community.
All the major landmarks and institutions are covered. Bygone landmarks include the infamous Bush Quinn Roadhouse, the Sutter Brewery, the Riverside Baths, and Edmonds Field, home of the beloved Sacramento Solons baseball team. Even more intriguing are vintage views of the icons that have survived: the Tower Theater complex, birthplace of Tower Books and Records; Sacramento City College; and William Land Park with Fairy Tale Town and the Zoo.
Woven into this landscape are many charming early pictures of family life, of both the ordinary folks and the rich and famous. The latter include luminaries such as Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, in a Halloween leopard suit at age six or so, and author Joan Didion, as a teenager editing the McClatchy High yearbook.
